Smoking Loon

Last week i found that the discount shelf at the local grocery had been restocked with new wine! the most intriguing were several varietals from Smoking Loon, a California winery.I had thought of trying some of their wine before, but at the 10$ pricepoint, i’ve got KNOW that it’s good wine, so when i saw their 2007 Pinot Noir at 3.49 a bottle, i had to try it.Really good!Only the second Pinot Noir of my wine journey(the first was the very first bottle of wine i bought, way back in September) and maybe it’s just because i have come so far on the journey, or maybe it’s just the comparrison with the inferior quality of the bag-in-box cask wines (not the 5 litre boxes-i’ll only stoop so low) but this Pinot was delicious.Lighter than any of the other reds i’ve been enjoying, but full of fruit and with a lingering flavor that i really liked. Not chalky or bitter like Merlot- just the opposite; smooth.Even my non-red-wine-drinking best friend liked it.We went back for more, and bought all they had for 3.50…They have that exact same vintage on the shelf on sale for 8.99, i hope they move more bottles to the clearance shelf.

Also on offer were the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2006 Chardonnay. The white was refreshing, not too dry but not sweet, and lacking the flavor of oak chips stirred around in the vat.crisp finish(not lingering). The Cab had big Cab flavor, and a mouth-feel reminiscent of cream.

I have been working with long-time associate Todd Buckley, and we’re getting good traction on a new “Burning Question” project. With G Money on lead guitar, but we still haven’t recruited a suitable drummer, so if you know any drop me a line.Got more solo gigs at the Winedale tavern-my gigging lifeline.

That’s the Wine and Song news, on the women front-I’m happy to say that that is the continuing to be the highlight of the three areas of focus! That woman is good to me!
